STV Presents Mini-Grants For Student PSAs

STV Presents Mini-Grants For Student PSAs

WFVT (WB55), one of Capitol Broadcasting’s Charlotte stations, supports education and service to the community in a unique way. Twice each year, WB55’s Student TeleVision (STV) accepts applications for mini-grants from the schools in the viewing area. As part of the application, the classrooms create their own PSAs; students and their teachers serve as scriptwriters, actors, producers, videographers, and creators.

Sweetwater Elementary students won a $500 prize for their school.

STV awards three $1,000 grand prizes each session; the money goes to the classrooms for supplies. The winning PSAs then go on the air on WB55 and UPN46. Four runner-up prizes of $500 are also presented each session.

Through this program STV has given away over $10,000 per year for a total of $55,000, monies that go directly to the schools. Underwriting partners such as Wendy’s and Duke Power help STV with the scholarship funds.

After the three grand prize winners are selected, WB55 reproduces the PSAs and runs them on the air for two weeks. The PSAs are exactly as the students shot them on VHS; WB55 simply uses their own equipment for the re-shoot to bring the film up to television airing quality.

Another group of participants from Sweetwater Elementary students shared in the prize.

Boiling Springs students won a $1,000 mini-grant for their PSA about friendliness.
