Upon his retirement from Capitol Broadcasting Company in 1997, then Director of Minority Affairs, J.D. Lewis learned that both CBC and the A.J. Fletcher Foundation had made a large donation to the Garner Road YMCA in his honor. The YMCA then decided to name the new wing to be built by the contribution for Lewis.
The groundbreaking for the new facility took place on Friday, December 13, 2002, at 10:00am at the Garner Road YMCA. Lewis attended along with his daughter, son and son-in-law.
