Goodmon Files Response To Comments on FCC Rule Consideration

Capitol Broadcasting Company and its President & CEO Jim Goodmon are continuing their vehement opposition to the relaxing of media ownership rules that the Federal Communications Commission may implement. The FCC still plans to complete its review of the rules by June 2, 2003, and in a surprise move last week media conglomerate Belo Corporation proposed the ownership cap be raised from 35% to 45%, a move that possibly weakened the strength of the opposition.

Goodmon filed a response to Belo’s letter to the FCC last week, saying that Belo Chairman and CEO Robert Decherd was offering what amounted to a deal with the Commission. Goodmon said that the FCC should consider each rule separately.

“This debate should not take place with deal-making and concessions between a few major media companies and a government agency with appointed, not elected, officials,” wrote Goodmon.
