MIX 101.5 WRAL-FM’s own Operations Manager Joe Wade Formicola, was inducted in the Detroit Radio Hall of Fame on Saturday, January 29, 2005, in Detroit, Michigan. The Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts, of which Formicola is an alumnus, put together the event. Thirty-eight inductees were honored for their outstanding careers in broadcast at a ceremony held at Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village. The inductees were all native Detroiters who traveled from all over the country to take part in the event.
Formicola’s professional experiences include on-air as well as programming and operations. Formicola was Operating Manager and Programming Director at WWBR/Detroit, Morning announcer at WYCD and WWWW/Detroit for 10 years, OM of WKIX/Raleigh and PD of KENR/Houston and WFDF/Flint, MI.
While doing mornings at WWWW in Detroit, he won the Country Music Association’s Award for “Major Market DJ of the Year” in 1988. He also won Billboard Magazine’s “DJ of the Year” in 1976 and 1984. As the recipient of numerous “Addys” for his work in radio and television, Formicola has been honored for outstanding performance in broadcasting by the governors of both North Carolina and Michigan.
