ConAgra Foods And Durham Bulls Team Up To Help Feed Children Better
|
Beginning Wednesday, June 15, 2005, every run the Bulls score is doing more than help them win games: Each run will help feed hungry children as well.
As part of ConAgra Foods’ sponsorship of Minor League Baseball this summer, the Charlotte Knights, Durham Bulls and Nashville Sounds are participating in the inaugural ConAgra Foods Feeding Children Better Challenge. For every run the three teams score this season, ConAgra Foods is making a $15-cash donation to America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network. This donation will provide a meal for 15 hungry children ($1 = one meal). By season’s end, up to $10,000 per market will be donated to Kids Cafes in Charlotte, NC, Nashville, TN and Raleigh-Durham on behalf of the Knights, Bulls and Sounds.
ConAgra Foods is the national sponsor of Kids Cafe, a kids-only after-school program run by America’s Second Harvest that provides free, nutritious food to hungry children in safe and nurturing environments. Through the ConAgra Foods Feeding Children Better program, the largest corporate initiative dedicated solely to attacking child hunger, ConAgra Foods opens new Kids Cafes across the country and provides funds to strengthen and grow existing Kids Cafes. To date it has funded more than 200 sites in 34 states and Washington, D.C.
“ConAgra Foods is committed to fighting child hunger in this country, and by teaming with Minor League Baseball, we hope to provide thousands of additional meals to hungry children in Charlotte, Durham, Nashville and other great baseball towns,” said Anita Wheeler, president, ConAgra Foods Feeding Children Better Foundation. “We are proud to support America’s pastime through a program that helps children get the nourishment they need.”
About America’s Second Harvest Kids Cafe Since 1999, ConAgra Foods has been the national sponsor of Kids Cafe. Kids Cafe, a program run by America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network, is one of the nation’s largest free meal service programs for children and provides nutritious food to hungry children in safe and nurturing environments. According to research conducted by the Center on Hunger and Poverty at Brandeis University, children who participate in Kids Cafes reported earning better grades in school, having more energy and less fatigue, exhibiting improved concentration, and feeling less grouchy. Parents and caregivers noted seeing improvements in their child’s overall health and learning.

“We are thrilled by this new effort to raise funds to help feed children who are hungry or at risk of hunger. ConAgra Foods has been extremely generous, long-time supporters of our efforts, and we are delighted that Minor League Baseball has now committed to our cause,” said Robert Forney, president and CEO, America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network.
“It is tragic that in our abundant nation, more than 13 million children in the United States live in food-insecure households, but, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we are now able to provide food to many at-risk children,” said Forney.
