WRAL News Sweeps May Ratings

Ratings WRAL-TV and FOX 50 finished another strong May sweeps with WRAL news winning every news block. The WRAL News morning team rallied and won the 5-7am slot, and WRAL’s 10pm News on FOX 50 finished with a huge night and beat WTVD’s 11pm news, Monday – Friday.

WRAL-TV
WRAL-TV dominated several segments of the day and prime time during the May sweeps period for 2005. The station won every time period with the exception of 7-9am, 7-7:30pm and 1:30-2am  (WRAL has no control over the programming during these time periods).  

Several prime time CBS shows saw a jump in ratings.

  • Without A Trace averaged a 16.5 household (HH) rating, up 27% from its strong May ’04 performance
  • CSI averaged a 21.3 HH rating, a 21% increase over May ’04
  • Navy NCIS is up a whopping 46% in HH Ratings over last year’s May ’04 performance
  • Two and A Half Men averaged an 11.6 HH rating, improving the May ’04 performance by 2%
  • CSI: Miami enjoyed a solid 16.9 HH rating average, a 5% increase over May ‘04
  • 48 Hours Mystery averages a 5.7 HH rating, a super 31% time period improvement over May ‘04

During the daytime hours, two talkers took WRAL-TV to the top of the ratings heap. Dr. Phil easily beat out WTVD’s Regis & Kelly head-to-head in May 2005 by 40%. Jane Pauley won the following time slot with a 3.2 HH rating/ 12 share, topping the time period against Tony Danza on WTVD and Ellen on WNCN.

And in the news department, WRAL-TV continued its domination. WRAL News took number one, beating the combined HH rating total for WTVD and WNCN at 5pm, 5:30pm and 6pm. WRAL’s News at 11 easily beat out WTVD’s and WNCN’s late news. WRAL is up 14% at 11pm with a 10.8 HH rating/20 share.

WRAL is up 16.7% year-to-year with its 6PM News in Persons 25-54, and also up 20% year-to-year with its 11PM News in Persons 25-54.

And WRAL earned top ratings late night as well. David Letterman dominated the late fringe with a 5.4 HH rating/13 share compared to WNCN’s Tonight Show with 3.5 HH rating/8 share.

FOX 50
FOX 50 finished the sweep with a 2.6 HH rating /6 share, up 0.2 ratings points year-to-year, one of only two stations in the market to see an overall increase.

WRAL News on FOX 50 at 10pm not only ranks as the #1 prime time newscast, but it beat most of the 11pm newscasts as well. WRAL News on FOX 50 is up 15% year-to-year, delivering a 6.8 HH rating/10 share, with only WRAL-TV’s 11pm newscast ranking higher among late night local news programming.

FOX Prime posted significant year-to-year gains, up a share point to 8.0 HH rating/12 share to rank #2 in the market. The leader in HH ratings is WRAL, also up a share point this year.

FOX 50’s original program, Gimme the Mike!, also brought big numbers for the station. The live finale’ was the highest-rated Prime Access program in the Raleigh-Durham market in May, among the demographics for Adults18-34, Adults18-49, Women18-34, Men18-34, and Men 18-49.

In the May sweeps, FOX 50 had more prime time programs in the top 20 than any other station in the Raleigh-Durham market. Among regularly-scheduled programs ranked on the Adult 18-49 rating, FOX 50 had 7 of the top 20. WRAL-TV came in second with 6. Competitors WTVD and WNCN had 4 and 3 respectively.
