The 5th Marine Division, who stormed Iwo Jima in 1945, will hold their 58th reunion at the Durham Bulls this week. |
The Durham Bulls are proud to announce festivities for the 58th reunion of the 5th Marine Division to be held at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Thursday, August 23rd as the Bulls host the Richmond Braves at 7:00pm. The 5th Division stormed the island of Iwo Jima during World War II on February 19, 1945, earning their place in the American conscience with the photo of the Marines raising the American Flag on the island. They’re story was immortalized in Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated film, Flags of our Fathers.
“My staff and I are honored to have the opportunity to host these real American heroes,” General Manager Mike Birling said, “This should be a night that everyone remembers for a long time.”
Pre-game festivities will include a pre-recorded message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James T. Conway, a ceremonial first pitch from Iwo Jima veteran and Triangle resident George Cattelona, the presentation of the flags from the Marine Honor Guard and a flyover by three Marine jet aircraft. During the game fans will have the opportunity to visit the Marine Corp recruiting booth and take a turn on the chin-up bar. The evening concludes with the playing of the Marine Hymn following the game.
Tickets for Thursday night’s game between the Durham Bulls and Richmond Braves are available at www.durhambulls.com or 956-BULL. To learn more about the 5th Marine Division, go to www.5thmardivassn.org.
