In February North Carolina’s unemployment rate hit 10.7%, more than double the rate from the previous February and the highest it’s been since the state started keeping seasonally adjusted data 33 years ago.
WRAL’s new Focal Point documentary “Here to Help” profiles North Carolinians dealing with the challenges of the recession and looks at programs and organizations that are available to help them. The documentary is hosted by WRAL-TV Anchor/Reporter Monica Laliberte and airs Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 7pm on WRAL-TV.
The North Carolina News Network recently produced a series “Faces of the Recession” about these tough economic times. Listen here. |
In 2008 home foreclosures in North Carolina jumped by more than 16 percent. And the Dow is down about 40% from its peak in October 2007 costing many North Carolinians a big chunk of their retirement savings. Older North Carolinians have not seen times like these since the Great Depression and younger people have never experienced an economic downturn like this in their lives.
“Here to Help” also reveals a unique effort by WRAL-TV to help its community cope with these tough times.
Focal Point “Here to Help” is the latest episode in the WRAL documentary series called Focal Point. These in-depth news documentaries focus on a single topic, bringing depth and clarity to complicated issues facing North Carolina. From North Carolina’s economy and environment, to health care and race relations – Focal Point takes viewers inside the lives of the people most affected. Focal Point tackles the tough questions with leaders and policymakers who have the power to effect change. WRAL News anchors, including David Crabtree, Pam Saulsby, Bill Leslie, Gerald Owens and Debra Morgan, host the series. Six to eight new episodes of Focal Point will be produced each year.
