On Monday, January 18, 2010, WJZY and WMYT attended and sponsored the 16th Annual H.L. McCrorey Family YMCA Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast at The Westin Charlotte. Over 1000 people were in attendance for the program, and WJZY and WMYT hosted 15 clients at our tables.
The keynote speaker was Emmy award winning journalist, Valerie Morris. Morris is the former Business Anchor for CNN domestic and international. Her core interest and passion is financial literacy for women, young adults and disenfranchised segments of the population concerning money issues.
“Everyone can be great because everybody can serve,” said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King knew what makes a great American. Doesn’t matter if you’re young or old. Doesn’t matter where you live. Doesn’t matter how busy you are. All that matters is what you do for others.
“Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this great celebration,” said WJZY client Evelynn McGrant of McGrant’s Tax and Bookkeeping. “When my Account Executive Wahida Taylor called and invited me to attend the breakfast I was thrilled and honored to be a part of it and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” McGrant added.

On Saturday, January 16th, WJZY sponsored and participated in the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade in uptown Charlotte. A huge crowd of parade goers gathered on both sides of the street on a beautiful day to see the parade. From marching bands to classic cars there was something for everyone to enjoy. The WJZY Cash Cow van rolled down the street along with mascot, Hurley, as co-pilot. The crowd was very excited to see a dog that could wave!
“The Charlotte Division of Capitol Broadcasting is pleased to continue to honor, celebrate and support the local initiatives that encompass the Martin Luther King Holiday,” said WZJY/WMYT Vice President and General Manager Shawn Harris.
