Winkie La Force, President of Leadership Triangle believes no class is complete without arranging a visit to WRAL-TV and exposing the students to the magic of television. A group of twenty-two college student from area schools recently came to the studios to get a behind-the-scenes look at the news process. They are a part of the college edition of the Leadership Triangle training. WRAL-TV Station Manager Jim Rothschild put together a comprehensive agenda which gave the student a glimpse of the newsroom process.
They watched a video of the morning planning meeting and how stories are selected to cover, and which reporters would be assign the tasks. WRAL-TV Assistant News Director Aysu Basaran, walked them through the elements of news gathering and producing. A number of speakers addressed them and they had opportunities to ask questions.
Finally, they got to watch the afternoon newscast live using a “virtual experience” providing them a control room view with the headset communications and the newscast itself on another side-by-side monitor. Afterwards they got to witness the news postmortem, where the entire news staff discusses the pros and cons of the presentations. WRAL-TV News Director Rick Gall gave a summary and took questions.
