Idol Audition
Singers flocked to Crabtree Valley Mall Saturday to try for a guaranteed ‘American Idol’ audition.

More than 100 aspiring singers took to the microphone – a cappella – Saturday morning, July 7, 2012, at Raleigh’s Crabtree Valley Mall.

They were competing for the title of “Triangle Idol” and a chance to audition for the producers of the reality TV juggernaut “American Idol” later this summer.

A trio of Triangle judges and FOX 50, the local affiliate that airs the show, will choose one person to get a trip to two to New Orleans where they are guaranteed an “Idol” audition.

Camille White, 17, said she was feeling anxious about performing in the middle of the mall. But the jitters went away for the Wake Forest teen. “I felt like I was in my element. I had fun,” she said.

The competitors used oldies, pop hits, country and classics to get their message across, hoping to hear from the judges that they would have a chance to follow in the footsteps of Garner native Scotty McCreery, the winner of “American Idol” Season 10.

Shane Harris, of Duplin County, recalled rooting for Scotty.

At the beginning of the season, somebody called me that night and said,

‘There is a guy who sings the exact same songs you do, and he made it through, he said'”

Harris hopes to be the next to make it through.

Chuck Dixon
Chuck Dixon of Roxboro wins the Triangle Idol contest & will get a guaranteed audition with Idol producers in New Orleans.

Harris and the others learned who won the audition on Sunday night when the announcement was made on FOX 50 at 10.

And the big winner is….

Chuck Dixon of Roxboro won the guaranteed audition with the producers of American Idol in New Orleans on July 17th, included airfare and hotel for two.

Good luck, Chuck! And thanks to the many singers who came to audition.
