Thousands of runners, walkers and breast cancer survivors converged on the Meredith College Campus for the 2013 Triangle Race for the Cure on Saturday, June 8th, with Team WRAL and Team Lynda leading the charge. Both WRAL-TV and MIX 101.5 put together teams to help support Komen for the Cure in funding breast cancer research.
“The day started earlier than a typical Race for the Cure day because the tropical storm delayed the usual Friday set-up,” said WRAL-TV Associate Producer Debbie Tullos. Tropical Storm Andrea deluged the Triangle with rain in the days before the event. “That meant more set-up Saturday morning before 6am. Despite the wet, muddy conditions, we got it done and had a very successful day. Many of our on-air folks ran and walked in the races, and visited with our loyal viewers. Lots of other CBC employees were also there, working together, making the day feel like a CBC family gathering!”
Team WRAL ended up with 172 members and has so far raised $8,135.34, but fundraising continues until July 8th.
“Komen says they’ve raised more than $1 million of their $1.2 million goal,” said Tullos. “It sounds like a lot of money, but that “.2” is very important and will make a huge difference in how many grants they can give local agencies helping local families fight breast cancer. That’s why we’re still pushing, encouraging people to give a little more.”
Still Time to Donate
Fundraising continues until July 8. You can still go to WRAL.com and search Team WRAL to donate. You can donate to Team Lynda here.
New Balance Raleigh-Durham supported Team Lynda in the Race for the Cure.
“Tropical Storm Andrea couldn’t keep us down!” said MIX 101.5 Morning Show Co-Host Lynda Loveland. “Team Lynda banded together in support of The Komen Triangle Race for the Cure. We had some returning runners and some new ones! “
CBC had a couple of employees do very well in the competitive race:
- WRAL-TV Anchor/Reporter Kelcey Carlson finished 2nd among all women, 17th overall
- WRAL-TV Producer Randy Mews won his age group and finished 25th overall
“We all know we were there to raise awareness of breast cancer, raise funds for research and support those who have/had it, but it’s really evident during the actual race,” said Loveland. “So many people were running in honor of someone with breast cancer. To read about that person on the back of the runner’s shirt was emotional at times. The show of love and support was inspiring.”
