American Tobacco, Capitol Broadcasting’s destination spot in downtown Durham, recently released more information about upcoming changes to the historic district.

Adjacent to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the Durham Performing Arts Center, the 16-acre campus became part of the Capitol Broadcasting family when CBC bought the option to the property in 1999 and then began an award-winning transformation.

“The vision for American Tobacco’s renaissance has always included the kind of top-drawer amenities that will reinforce the campus’ status as a world-class destination for entertainment and business,” said American Tobacco Vice President of Real Estate Michael Goodmon. “As we approach the 10th anniversary of the campus’ rebirth, we remain wholeheartedly committed to this comprehensive vision. We will have more news to share as our plans take shape.”

Goodmon told WRAL.com that Capitol Broadcasting “plans to expand the Durham Performing Arts Center and has acquired two nearby historic buildings at the campus, which have been renovated to contain numerous apartments as well as retail and office space.”

The expansion announcements continued earlier this week when American Tobacco announced a new loft-style hotel will be coming to the campus in the spring of 2015.  Aloft Durham Downtown, owned by Raleigh company Davidson & Jones and part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. hotel group, will house 134 loft-style rooms, and outdoor pool, a bar, a 24-hour gym, private parking and more than 2,200 square feet of flexible meeting space.

“Since the rebirth of the American Tobacco Campus almost ten years ago, we have envisioned a complete experience with a full array of services and attractions,” Goodmon said in a news release. “While the vision to develop a one-of-a-kind destination has always been there, we’ve spent countless hours looking for the right plans and partners. By partnering with globally acclaimed Starwood Hotels & Resorts and respected regional powerhouse Davidson & Jones, we’re ready to create an environment worthy of dynamic Durham and the Triangle.”
