99.9 The Fan Radio Sports Talk Host Joe Ovies isn’t your typical beauty queen material, but he’s decided to take to the stage to try to win a crown to help a good cause. Ovies will be competing in the inaugural Mr. Triangle Beauty Pageant coming up on Friday, June 20, 2014, at Kings Barcade in Raleigh. The JDRF Young Leadership Committee of the Triangle is hosting the event.
“I’ll be putting myself out there for embarrassment,” said Ovies. “Why am I doing it? As a favor to a listener/Twitter follower. She organized it and asked. Thought it would be a fun thing to do while helping a local cause.”
The inaugural event supports the Triangle Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and type 1 diabetes research support.
“Much like the Movember fundraiser, I’ve been looking for quirky ways to get involved in the community and represent CBC,” said Ovies. “Our company has always done an excellent job getting involved and this is my way of contributing. Just something a little different.”
And, yes, the pageant will involve a swimsuit and talent competitions.
“I’ll be curious to see if my swimwear choice of trunks with plastic hula girls on it will go over,” said Ovies. “I also have a creative way to show off my talent of dealing with crazed sports fan callers to 99.9FM The Fan.”
Besides the title of Mr. Triangle, a “Mr. Moneymaker” award will be given to the contestant who raises the most money the night of the event. All proceeds go to the JDRF.
“It would be great if fellow CBC employees and listeners showed up at Kings to help me win the ‘Mr. Money Maker’ award,” said Ovies.
When pageant officials asked Ovies why he should win, he said, “I’m just a simple man, trying to make my way in the universe. Much like the rest of the bros who inhabit the Triangle.”
The pageant starts at 10pm. Cost is $6 for the pageant or $10 for both the pageant and the Dangling Loafer comedy show at 8pm.
