New 4 P.M. Newscast Will Air on Sister Station FOX 50
North Carolina’s most-watched news station is expanding to serve the viewers in its 23-county viewing area. WRAL News at 4 p.m. on FOX 50 launches January 12th and will be anchored by veteran news team Gerald Owens, Jackie Hyland and meteorologist Mike Maze.
Owens, Hyland and Maze currently anchor top-ranked WRAL News at 5:30 p.m. and the number one ranked WRAL News at 10 on FOX 50.
“We’re proud to provide expanded afternoon news coverage to a new audience, while expanding our news brand to Capitol Broadcasting station FOX 50,” says Steven D. Hammel, Vice President and General Manager of WRAL and FOX 50.
WRAL also produces news weekday mornings 7-9 on FOX 50. With this expansion, WRAL News will be producing nine and a half hours of live news every weekday.
WRAL News Director Rick Gall says, “The 4 p.m. newscast gives us an opportunity to get started earlier and be on the air when a significant amount of news is breaking. Viewers will be able to see the top local, state, and national stories all in one place. And we’ll make sure they’re up to speed on what’s trending in social media. We’ll cover a lot of ground, tapping the vast experience, talent, and depth of a terrific newsroom staff.”
In 2014, Raleigh-Durham’s favorite television station received the top honor of Outstanding News Operation at the North Carolina Associated Press awards for the seventh time in nine years. WRAL-TV took home a total of 14 honors from the RTDNAC/AP awards ceremony honoring the best in broadcast journalism in North Carolina and South Carolina. The station also won three regional Edward R. Murrow awards and was honored with seven trophies, including News Excellence, at the MidSouth Regional Emmy Awards. The station also won three national Gabriel Awards, including Secular TV Station of the Year.
