In his acceptance speech for the Silver Circle induction, Crabtree noted he has done “15,000 newscasts working at some phenomenal televisions stations, for the last 21 years at WRAL.”
“Remember we are servants to our viewers. Absolute servants,” Crabtree told his fellow newscasters in the room. “Without them we don’t exist. So every day, I know it sounds so trite to some people, but it’s so true – giving them a reason to have hope, expose something, teach them something and remember that every day we do this, it’s a gift to us and such a privilege.”
Crabtree’s daughters Starling and Hayden accompanied him to the ceremony and he dedicated his award to them.
“Proud does not describe what I felt for my dad last evening,” Starling later posted on Facebook. “He was presented with the Silver Circle Award. He’s reported in 42 states, 17 countries, won 13 Emmys, 4 years as NC’s journalist of the year and does it all with humility.”
WRAL-TV Anchor Renee Chou, who served as a presenter during the ceremony, also posted her thoughts about the evening.
“Special shoutout to Silver Circle honoree WRAL David Crabtree, recognized for his incredible imprint on the broadcasting industry,” said Chou. “So proud to work alongside these folks every day! In David’s words– we, as journalists, are ‘servants to our viewers.’ Thank you for the honor and privilege of serving YOU.”
“It’s the greatest business in the world, still, and we get to do it every day,” said Crabtree.
