CBC’s “legal eagle” is getting press for her outstanding work. The Triangle Business Journal recently honored Corp Vice President & General Counsel Jennifer Venable among its Corporate Counsel of the Year Awards for 2015.
The awards recognize “outstanding attorneys who keep the business world running. These are in-house lawyers who are leaders in the Triangle business community, and who have been involved in various charities and philanthropic activities in the Triangle.”
Born in Reno, Nevada, Venable earned her B.A. from The College of William and Mary and earned her law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. She joined CBC in the spring of 2013.
“Jennifer has the perfect demeanor for this position,” said Capitol Sports Vice President George Habel. “She approaches things with a sense of inquiry and respect for the business unit. She doesn’t act like the corporate legal police. There haven’t been any ‘hair on fire’ moments with Jennifer (not yet!) Still, she likes to move projects along – wants to get ‘er done. I really enjoy working with her.”
TBJ interviewed Venable for a profile in the publication in honor of the awards.
She told TBJ the most challenging part of her role as an in-house counsel is, “Striking (and maintaining) the right balance between being responsive to incoming requests and making time for the work that no one is asking about but needs to be done.”
When TBJ asked Venable if she weren’t in the law line of business, what she would be doing, Venable responded, “I’d own an independent bookstore.”
That response fits in well with Venable’s volunteer work in the community. She serves on the board of Books Are Magic, helping the non-profit with legal matters, book drives and more.
“All lawyer jokes aside, Jennifer is a joy to work with,” WRAL-TV Vice President & General Manager Steve Hammel. “She is prompt, courteous and ALWAYS gets us what we need. Jennifer combines good common sense with the law and with her understanding of individual business units within Capitol Broadcasting.”
Venable received the award for “Outstanding Corporate Counsel – Private Company” at a luncheon on Thursday, October 22, 2015, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in Durham.
