The Bullpen recently celebrated its new food offerings with a grand re-opening of the kitchen in mid-January.
Bull City Hospitality Director of Food and Beverage Dave Levey reports, “Overall the first weekend was a great success. We had a full line up of Bull Durham Beer on Tap.”
The new menu is diverse and includes everything from Grain Bowls to Beer Battered Pretzels.
“Our team from the Bulls spent valuable time on conceptualizing the menu from both a perceptional view as well as a functional one,” explained Bull City Hospitality Sous Chef John Horn. “All involved worked very hard and have supported me in this endeavor, none more than Chef Curtis from the ballpark. He has been a great asset for me on this thing.”
Bull City Hospitality is the Durham Bulls’ food and beverage company, staffed and operated by the team.
“My past experience has been in the pub style cuisine,” continued Horn. “I have learned with that experience to utilize beer on many fronts, and that was a direction I definitely wanted to take at the Bullpen. We use the Bull Durham beer for braising the pork, making the Chili Verde, and of course beer batter and beer cheese sauce.”
Horn is excited about the possibilities of specials the new kitchen crew will be creating.
“We wanted for the cooking time in the kitchen to be fast, so many of the dishes are quick assembly of set up recipes that are produced in prep time,” said Horn. “We have been lucky so far to have a solid crew, they seemed to have bought in to what we are about. It’s been an encouraging start, I hope we can continue to improve and evolve.”
The Bullpen is located in downtown Durham, adjacent to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The tap room features a full slate of Bull Durham Beer Co brews, as well as rotating musicians from the Music Makers Relief Foundation.
