American Tobacco Lucky Strike Tower

Things are about to get brighter at three CBC locations as two campuses carry on an annual tradition and one joins the fun for the first time.

American Tobacco kicks off the events with their 14th annual lighting of the Lucky Strike Tower on Friday, November 30, 2018.  Rocky Mount Mills will light their water tower for the first time on Saturday night, and WRAL-TV will follow with the 60th annual lighting of the WRAL tower on Monday.

WRAL’s Tower Lighting Special airs at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3
For the 60th annual tower lighting, WRAL-TV is inviting special guests to join us and all of our viewers to tune in for a 30-minute reminder of the ways we celebrate the season.

Debra Morgan and David Crabtree host live from the plaza outside WRAL Studios on Western Boulevard, where snow is promised and songs will create a Christmas atmosphere.

The special begins with gospel music from United Cadence.

A look back at the origins of the tower lighting tradition will follow, with interviews from long-time WRAL anchor Charlie Gaddy and others.

Dancers from the Carolina Ballet’s cast of “The Nutcracker” will perform.

We’ll revisit some of the most memorable moments in tower lighting history – a silly Scrooge, the first aerial view of the tower and more.

The evening will culminate in the lighting of the 2,800 colorful bulbs that adorn the 300-foot TV tower as Brooke Simpson, a finalist from “The Voice” and a Halifax County native, sings “O Holy Night.”
