Duke Performances Concert: Rissi Palmer at American Tobacco
The next in the series of Duke Performances at American Tobacco is coming up Wednesday, September 22, 2021 Wednesday, October 6, 2021. Come see Rissi Palmer in concert from 6:30-8:00pm.
Palmer is the second in the four-concert series featuring North Carolina-based artists, a partnership between Duke Performances and American Tobacco. The concerts take place under the Lucky Strike water tower in the open-air amphitheater and are free and open to all.
Rissi Palmer’s self-termed “Southern Soul,” a sound interweaving R&B, gospel, and country, launched her into the mainstream as the first Black woman to chart a country song (2007’s “Country Girl”) since 1987. Her trailblazing trajectory since has centered a counter-history of country music, both in her own recordings — Revival, her 2019 album, is her most poignant personal-political statement to date — and her stewardship of the genre through Color Me Country, an Apple Music radio show focused on the Black, Indigenous, and Latinx histories of country music.
