A CBC Sports Radio team is once again at the ACC Tournament. 99.9 The Fan OG Sports Talk Hosts Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio with 99.9 The Fan Producer/Board Operator Dennis COX are reporting live, in-person from Barclays Center in NY this week, covering the games.
“It’s been 2 years since we got sent home from the ACC Tournament in Greensboro because of COVID,” said Ovies. “It feels both like yesterday and an eternity since that happened. Let’s just say I’m glad we’re no longer trying to do a sports talk radio show without sports and nobody on the road.”
Giglio is happy for his first opportunity to travel since joining the CBC team.
“In another lifetime, I used to travel to games all the time, but this is the first since I started working for CBC in 2020,” said Giglio. “It has been good to feel normal again. Zoom calls have in some ways made covering games easier but also made our jobs more difficult so it’s good to get a chance to see the people who run the ACC and the people who cover the ACC again.”
Ovies gave Capcom the lay of the land at the first in-person tournament since lockdown:
While the ACC Tournament in Brooklyn is a very “normal” experience, the waning days of COVID protocols are still present in NYC. Lots of bars and eateries around Barclays Center have adapted to it, some of it for the better with heated outdoor seating arrangements. The most interest realization of being back the ACC Tournament is simple seeing people in person again. After two basketball seasons of zoom post game press conferences, many have made a note of when it was the last time they actually got to ask players questions in person. It’s a small thing, but it makes a huge difference with the people asking questions and the type of answers you get. Way more conversational.
Same goes with interviews on the radio show, where we’ve had some ACC people drop by our radio booth. Everyone’s demeanor is a little more joyful because we all understand just how weird everything has been.
