J. Mike Blake, a HighSchoolOT contributor, was named the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Media Representative of the Year on Friday, July 1, 2022.

Blake joined the HighSchoolOT team in 2018 after a 10-year run covering high school sports for The News & Observer, The Cary News, and The Herald Sun.

While at The News & Observer, Blake won 14 NC Press Association Awards and is the only two-time winner of the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association Media Person of the Year Award.

Blake is a graduate of Western Harnett High School and North Carolina State University. While in college, he worked with WRAL’s “Football Friday,” assisting as a notetaker for the show. He also joined the HighSchoolOT staff in 2008 when the website first launched.

Blake has covered high school sports in all corners of the state, providing coverage of events at 219 high schools. He has also launched the @RecordsWatchNC Twitter account, which assists in tracking down state records.

Upon leaving The News & Observer in 2018, Blake started teaching American literature and public speaking at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh.

This marks the second time a member of the HighSchoolOT team has won the Tim Stevens Media Representative of the Year Award. HighSchoolOT Managing Editor Nick Stevens won the award in 2018.
