The 35th Annual Walk for Hope broke a new record last Sunday with over 4,000 participants. Capitol Broadcasting Company is a proud Community Partner for the Angus Barn annual fundraiser to benefit research and treatment for mental illness. Multiple CBC divisions collaborate to support the Walk for Hope, including WRAL-FM, WRAL-TV and WRAL Digital.
The walk, run and festival event took place at the Angue Barn on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
MIX 101.5 participated in Walk for Hope for the 8th time this year. The MIX Mornings crew at WRAL-FM emcees the event, while several WRAL-TV News personalities participate.
“The Walk For Hope inspires us every single year,” said WRAL-FM Mornings Co-Host Kyle Smelser. “Over 4,000 people showed up to remember and celebrate those that they loved and to make a difference for those who might struggle with mental health in the future.”
He continued, “There is not a day in the calendar year that makes us feel as connected as this one does and one that offers hope for the future. Even better, all of the money raised stays right here in NC!”
WRAL-TV Anchors/Reporters Michelle Mackonochie and Brian Shrader represented the Big 5 alongside WRAL-TV Sports Anchor Kacy Hintz.
“This was my first year there at the Walk for Hope,” said Mackonochie. “WOW what a fantastic event.”
She continued, “The Angus Barn is a gorgeous venue and there was something there for everyone to enjoy. From free food, coffee to get the walkers and runners going and delicious food when they returned.”
All of the funds raised go directly to local mental health research at the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Psychiatry. The event also raises awareness to fight the stigma of mental illness.
Mackonochie appreciated the opportunity to be involved.
She explained, “This was all about mental health awareness and supporting the cause. We all know somebody who has been affected by mental health and to see the community come together like that and support each other was a beautiful thing. It’s a conversation we must continue to have. The event was awesome.”
