CBS 10 WILM Announces New Digital Transmitter Now Operating from a Higher Tower with Higher Power

With Wilmington being the first market in the nation to make the transition from analog to digital signal, CBS 10 WILM announces its new higher tower, higher power position. WILM-TV has recently relocated its broadcast tower to Delco, NC, a change that increases the station’s digital footprint significantly across the Wilmington designated market area (DMA). The signal broadcasts from roughly 850 feet high.
“The higher tower and higher power allows for a much greater footprint, covering the vast majority of our five counties,” says WILM-TV General Manager Constance H. Knox. As of August 17, 2008, television viewers are now able to watch their local CBS affiliate over the air all across New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender Counties, as well as most of Bladen and Columbus Counties. Additionally, the signal reaches into southern portions of Duplin and Sampson Counties and southeastern Onslow County.
Knox advises, “Keep in mind that all of the local Wilmington stations have moved to UHF frequencies, therefore over-the-air viewers will need UHF antennas.” For optimal reception, viewers should point their antennas toward the new tower in Delco. “The biggest issues we’re seeing is not getting antennas high enough,” says Knox. “In some cases, attic or roof-mounted antennas may be needed to receive all stations in the area.”
WILM’s digital assignment is channel 40 but over-the-air viewers can continue to find the station on channel 10. Depending on their system, they may have to tune to channel 40 manually when first tuning their television; however, many auto-scan features will take care of this automatically.
