Join Downtown Durham, Inc. and the City of Durham in a celebration of the completion of the downtown streetscape project Saturday, June 23, 2007. Major, the famous bronze bull that has made his home at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park over the last few seasons, will be making the move to his new home at the corner of Corcoran and Parrish Street.
The event will be held in the City Center District of downtown, with entertainment in three locations culminating with a performance by Russell Thompkins, Jr. and the New Stylistics and a closing fireworks display. There will be entertainment at the 5 Points Stage, sponsored by Fox 50, and a Kids Stage in the Parrish Street area, sponsored by Kimley Horn. The main stage will be at the new CCB plaza at Corcoran and Chapel Hill streets.
Festivities begin at 4 p.m. with music on all three stages. At 6 p.m. there will be a ceremony to unveil the bronze sculpture of “Major” the bull at its new home in the CCB Plaza.
The highlight of the evening will be the performance of Russell Thompkins, Jr. and the New Stylistics. The evening will conclude at 9:30 p.m. with a light show spectacular. Major sponsors for the free event include FOX 50, WTVD 11, Duke University/Duke Medical Center and Kimley Horn.
Downtown Durham is experiencing a major renaissance with over $1 billion in private and public investment creating new housing, office and retail space, tourist attractions and public infrastructure improvements. As part of the investment, the City is completing a street re-design, converting three streets – Main, Corcoran and Chapel Hill – from one-way to two-way, improving navigation of the downtown area and serving as the “spine” linking downtown to other districts. The project also includes decorative sidewalks, landscaping and lighting to enhance the new appearance of downtown Durham.
