Raleigh Hall of Fame to Induct Fred Fletcher

The Raleigh Hall of Fame is honoring one of CBC’s legends. Former CBC President Fred Fletcher will be posthumously inducted this coming September. The announcement came at the April 17th Raleigh City Council meeting.
Fred Fletcher was a staple on Raleigh radio from the inception of WRAL-AM in 1939. Known far and wide as the Fairy Tale Man, he spun yarns with his own animated voices & sound effects. Many a Triangle resident woke up with Fletcher for years. Then Fletcher moved on to television, being one of the five person team who won the license for WRAL-TV in the mid-1950s.
Fletcher is also well known for his dedicated work with the Parks & Recreation organizations in both Raleigh and Wake County. He died of cancer in 2000, but his memory lives strong in the heart of CBC employees and the many viewers and listeners in the Triangle.

Fifteen other individuals will be inducted along with Fletcher, the group chosen from 54 applications. The Raleigh Hall of Fame serves to honor individuals and non-profit organizations that have made lasting contributions to Raleigh’s proud history.
The list of 3rd annual inductees includes N.C. State Women’s Basketball Coach Kay Yow, the Raleigh Little Theatre. For a full list of inductees, see the announcement on the Raleigh Hall of Fame website.

These inductees will be honored on Thursday evening, September 13 at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts.
Fred Fletcher’s father and CBC founder, A.J. Fletcher was posthumously inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame in its inaugural year, 2005.
