City Council Names Bulls Park Field for Goodmon

The City Council voted unanimously Thursday, April 5, 2007, to name the playing field of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park as Goodmon Field in honor of CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon for his contributions to the city of Durham and to baseball.

The vote on a proposal by Mayor William H. Bell came a few hours before the Bulls baseball team opened its season by hosting the Syracuse Chiefs for the 2007 International League season.

Goodmon was a driving force in the construction of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park that was built in 1995 and expanded in 1998. Capitol Broadcasting also has been behind the redevelopment of the American Tobacco buildings into office and commercial space across Blackwell Street from the ballpark.

Bells’ resolution to the Council stated, “The city has had a continuing and growing relationship with Capitol Broadcasting Company and Jim Goodmon, president and CEO. That relationship has produced the Durham Baseball Athletic Park (DBAP), the American Tobacco project and many philanthropic, social and community projects and investments. Mr. Goodmon has been at the forefront of improving the Durham community as a business leader, community advocate and caring individual. His leadership has always been inclusive and his activities, investments and business ventures have always been of the highest quality and of the highest standards.”

Bell also noted that “his real estate investment in American Tobacco was the largest historic preservation project in the state, providing $150 million investment in 1 million square feet of vacant space and providing over 3,000 jobs in Downtown Durham.
