Lewis’ Death Mourned But Legacy Celebrated With News Tributes

Capitol Broadcasting Company & WRAL-TV lost a living legend this past Saturday with the death of J.D. Lewis. An icon in the community, Lewis broke many barriers for African-Americans, becoming a leader in broadcasting and in the world beyond it. His death on February 17, 2007, has made headlines and inspired some heartfelt tributes.

“J.D. Lewis was a stalwart of our community, a broadcasting pioneer, a civil rights leader, and mentor to thousands. I’m reminded that he also represents what’s called the ‘Greatest Generation’ as a Montfort Point Marine…but he was more than that. All of broadcasting – no, all of society – owes him a debt of gratitude for the good aspects of what we do…and the wonderful progress we have made…that is his legacy.”
