Jazz lovers in the Triangle are about to get a big treat. Renowned jazz singer Carol Sloane will perform a benefit and tribute concert at American Tobacco in downtown Durham on Friday, December 8th. Sloane will be singing as an homage to her good friend Lee Wing.
Wing, a champion for public telecommunications died earlier this year in August. She was a tireless advocate for the educational use of public television and radio, and several of her friends and family organized the concert featuring Sloane as a tribute to Wing’s life work.
An Evening of World-Class Jazz with Carol Sloane, featuring the music of Duke Ellington, will take place in American Tobacco’s Bay 7. Doors will open at 7pm with the concert beginning at 7:45pm.

Retired WRAL-TV Anchor Charlie Gaddy, A.J. Fletcher Foundation President Barbara Goodmon and her husband, CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon, are sponsoring the evening along with Joan Siefert Rose, Ashley Thrift, Cliff Scott and Steve Wing. Net proceeds benefit the N.C. Partnership for Children/Smart Start’s National Technical Assistance Center.

These seats include premium seating for the concert and a post-concert champagne toast with Ms. Sloane. Non-reserved main floor and balcony seating tickets are available as well. American Tobacco’s Bay 7 has a capacity of 450, so seating overall is limited.

Wing spent her career in public service, serving as the Executive Director for the N.C. Agency for Public Telecommunications for over two decades. She also worked in state government advising Governor Jim Hunt on arts and communications policy.
Most recently Wing worked with WRAL-TV on the educational program Smart Start Kids. She developed the concept for the program and worked closely on creating the half-hour episodes of the program.

Lee Wing loved music, writing music and lyrics for her entire adult life. Several prominent musicians recorded her material including Pearl Bailey, Carol Sloane and Nancy Wilson. Wing also wrote the theme songs for Call-In Kids and Smart Start Kids.
Sloane recently won the 2006 Backstage Bistro Award for Outstanding Jazz Performance. She has been performing professionally for over five decades when she began a career in her native New England. In the early 1970’s she spent several years performing in a club in Raleigh and also spent a stint in Chapel Hill during the ‘80s during which time she hosted a radio show for WUNC radio.
