On Saturday, August 27, 2005, the Durham Bulls made their annual presentation of the Goodmon Awards, given to the players who best represent excellence on the field and in the community. Presenting the awards were Durham Bulls General Manager Mike Birling and Manager Bill Evers.
The 2005 team MVP went to Durham Bulls shortstop B.J. Upton. B.J. was one of the team’s most consistent offensive performers, leading the team with a .303 batting average, a .390 on-base percentage 34 doubles, 89 runs scored and 41 stolen bases. He also finished second on the team with 70 runs batted in.
Next, the Bulls presented the Pitcher of the Year and Community Service Award to Bulls starting Pitcher John Webb. John led the Bulls in wins, starts, innings pitched and strikeouts this season, while regularly making visits to the children at Duke and North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
The 2005 Team Spirit Award went to infielder Luis Ordaz. Though Ordaz battled injuries through much of the 2005 season, he remained a positive influence in the clubhouse, offering guidance to many of the team’s younger players.
And finally, the Dillard’s Barbeque fan favorite award went to Bulls infielder Brooks Badeaux. Finishing his fifth season with the Durham Bulls, “Brooksie” was a regular at team autograph signings and teaching youngsters the game at Pepsi Baseball Camps.
