WJZY-TV Sponsors Community Basketball Tournament |
Teams took the court in the parking lot of Knights Stadium for July’s Hoop It Up tournament. |
On the weekend of July 23 & 24, 2005, thousands of sports fans from North and South Carolina crowded the Charlotte Knights Baseball Stadium parking lot in Rock Hill for the WJZY UPN46 Hoop It Up Basketball Tournament.
Some 200 teams participated in the 3-on-3 tournament, and most brought friends and family along to watch and cheer. The winners now have an opportunity to represent Charlotte in the Hoop It Up World Championships at Walt Disney World in September.
WJZY-TV sponsored the weekend basketball event.

“We are thrilled to be a part of Hoop It Up because it’s a win-win for viewers and sponsors,” said WJZY UPN46 Local Sales Manager Matt Livoti. “It is difficult for television stations and advertisers to get in front of young men in the 18-34 year age range, and this event really attracts them.”
Hamburgers, ice cream and other snacks were available from tournament sponsors, which included Hardee’s, Baskin Robbins and Circle K. And recruiters from The National Guard were on-hand to help run the event.
Hardees & a variety of other sponsors hosted tents at the event. |
In addition to being a great summer weekend family attraction, Hoop It Up enabled participants to meet WJZY UPN46 on-air host Jeff Johnson, who also acted as master of ceremonies.
Station employees staffed an event area that included a misting tent (very popular in the near 100-degree weather) and a three-point shooting contest. Viewers could also register for great prizes including Charlotte Bobcat game tickets and a basketball autographed by NBA Rookie of The Year Emeka Okafor.
