After hearing, “The tribe has spoken” and having his torch doused, Greensboro native Jeff Varner came to the Triangle on Thursday, April 19th to appear on both WRAL-FM and WRAL-TV. A cast member of Survivor II, Varner became the first person voted out of the unified tribe when Kucha and Ogakor joined in the wilds of Australia; the seventh voted out of the outback overall.
Varner had a busy time in Raleigh. He began his day at 6:30am on the Early Morning Show with Bill, Schatzie & Angela on WRAL-FM. Varner took calls from listeners and talked about his adventures as a Survivor. He even had a surprise call from fellow Survivor, Michael Skupin, arranged by MIX Morning Producer Mike Morse.
Varner then spent a few hours at WRAL-TV, cavorting with WRAL-TV Trafficologist Mark Roberts in the azalea gardens at the studio. A former cheerleader at Appalachian State and UNC-CH, Varner joined the award winning squad from NC State in trying to teach Roberts the ropes of cheering. The tribe spoke and Roberts will be remaining behind his desk on the air for now.
Lunchtime found Varner at Darryl’s with the MIX 101.5 Early Morning Show crew and the 30 winners of a listener contest. He signed autographs, took pictures with the winners and answered their questions. WRAL-TV’s Tom Lawrence stopped by for a live shot during the noon news. After a little more live broadcasting on the radio waves, Varner headed to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill to visit with young patients there. He ended the day back at WRAL, with a chat on WRAL OnLine.
