WRAL-TV Personalities Among Spectator‘s Best in the Triangle |
The Triangle’s Arts & Entertainment Newsweekly, the Spectator, has published its Best in the Triangle (BIT) list for the year 2000, and two WRAL-TV personalities have made the list. WRAL-TV Chief Meteorologist Greg Fischel was the Readers’ Choice for Best TV News Personality and both the Judges’ Pick and Readers’ Choice for Best TV Weather Forecasts. WRAL-TV Sports Anchor Tom Suiter made the list as both Judges’ Pick and Readers’ Choice for Best TV Sports Personality.

Under Best TV News Personality the Spectator describes Fischel’s win as Readers’ Choice by saying, “Reader’s choice? Easy pick. For eight years, Greg Fischel has been our reader’s favorite weatherman and he’s dominated that category because of his natural charisma, conversational tone, enthusiasm for his job and empathy with his viewers-qualities which take him to the top of the charts here as well.” The lauds for Fischel, deemed the “Triangle’s most meritorious meteorologist” by Spectator, went on in the Best TV Weather Forecast category: “More readers (and more judges) turn to WRAL than any other station-and Greg Fischel’s wit and wisdom is the chief reason we place our trust in Channel 5.” |

The praise for Suiter was high as well. As the Judges’ Pick and Readers’ Choice in the Best TV Sports Personality category, he was thus described: “Fourteen years and counting for Tom Suiter’s dominance in this category…Suiter and his crack team of sports enthusiasts not only report the latest scores or cover the latest news (and this past season has been full of it, ranging from the UNC basketball coach crisis to the sudden celebrity of a certain Ms. Jones), but they share the enthusiasm of the fans themselves. And that enthusiasm might win anyone over.” |
A few other Capitol Broadcasting Company entities made the BIT list as well. WRAL-FM was the Readers’ Choice for Best Radio Station for Doing Weekend Laundry. The renovations and additions at Memorial Auditorium received notice as the Readers’ Choice for Best Public Restoration; the A.J. Fletcher Foundation provided a great deal of the funding for part of that project, the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater. Also in that category, CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon received recognition: “As an honorable mention here, the judges also gave high marks to Jim Goodmon’s restoration projects in Durham.”
