CBC Celebrates the 99 Day Countdown to the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games
On Friday, March 19, Governor Hunt joined special Olympic athletes from across the State on a train ride to celebrate the accomplishments of Special Olympic athletes, showcase the dedication of Host Towns across the State, and “Invite the World” to North Carolina during the summer of 1999. The whistle stop tour wound its way from Charlotte to Raleigh, NC, marking 99 days to the largest sporting event in the world for 1999. There will be more than 130 North Carolina cities and communities serving as Host Towns to the 7,000 athletes attending the games.
A large crowd awaited the arrival of the train carrying Governor Hunt and the Special Olympic Athletes.
The tour made its way through many cities and communities participating in the Host Town program. The train arrived in Raleigh shortly after noon, where athletes disembarked carrying special invitations that would be mailed to the 150 countries competing in the 19 sporting events that will make up the 1999 Special Olympic Summer World Games in June, 1999.
