Idea from CBC’s Habel Results in NCCU Athletics App
A suggestion from Capitol Sports Vice President George Habel turned into a new app for NC Central athletics fans and a new “field” for former CBC division StepLeader.
A recent article in Durham’s Herald-Sun revealed the connection. In “NCCU Eagles fans have new mobile app,” John McCann writes:
The idea for NCCU’s app came from Capitol Broadcasting executive George Habel… Habel was at the table when NCCU athletics director Ingrid Wicker-McCree and others were brainstorming about building the brand of the historically black college that is competing for attention in the Triangle with Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State, each of them big-time, Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
“The idea for the app just came out of that conversation,” Habel said.
While NCCU is a Division I school in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the university just doesn’t have the resources to tell its story the way that those ACC schools can, Habel said.
The NCCU app helps level the playing field at least in terms of online exposure, Habel said.
Last fall, FOX 50 helped NCCU with a campaign to promote its relationship with Durham’s WNCU 90.7-FM, which aired NCCU football games.
The NCCU Sports Network app provides mobile access to live audio game broadcasts as well as interviews with coaches and athletes. News updates, schedules, results, rosters and more are on the app, and the StepLeader and NCCU staffers are working on the possibility of video.
The app launched at the halftime of the Monday, March 4, 2013, game between the NC Central Eagles and S.C. State. StepLeader, formerly a division of Capitol Broadcasting, designed the app. The NCCU app is their first foray into college athletics.
