CBC Radio is making the most of the Carolina Hurricanes 2023 run for the Stanley Cup.
First CBC Sports Radio put together a promo that put listeners on the ice for a chance to win big. Then MIX 101.5 decided to send a personality up in a helicopter for a unique coin-flip style puck drop.
CBC Sports Radio Has $10K Playoff Payout Winner
99.9 The Fan hosted round two of the sports radio station’s playoff payout on Thursday, May 4, at the Invisalign Arena in Morrisville, where the Canes practice.
“We had a quick turn around this round, so we qualified 5 people on-air that Monday & Tuesday,” explained 99.9 The Fan Sports Radio Promotions Manager Brianna Fletcher. “Lucky caller number 9 was invited to be one of our five finalists. Each person had one shot for 10k.”
99.9 The Fan Sports Reporter/Producer Dennis Cox cheered on the finalists and directed the fun which was sponsored by Carolina Ford Dealers.
“The 10K shot was from the far blue line to the goal line (114 ft),” said Fletcher. “They had to shoot the puck in a 3.5-inch slot and our first contestant did it!!! To top it off, we even had a second person make a shot for $100.”
A third winner took home a pair of playoff tickets to Friday night’s game. After the shootout, the five finalists were each given a random box. One box held a golden puck. The person with that box won the pair of tickets!
99.9 The Fan hosted the exact same contest during round one of a pair of play-off tickets and $10k. No one made the winning shot that time, but one of those lucky finalists did win the tickets.
The folks at CBC Sports Radio are already brainstorming ideas to up the ante for the next $10k Playoff Payout should the Canes advance to the next round.
MIX Takes Puck Drop to New Heights
MIX Mornings Kyle, Bryan and Sarah gave listeners a chance to win a pair of tickets for the Carolina Hurricanes vs New Jersey Devils in Round 2, Game 2, of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on Friday, May 5 at PNC Arena!
“We branded it ‘Carolina’s Highest Puck Drop!’” explained MIX Mornings’ Kyle Smelser. “Why drop a puck from 4 feet up when you can borrow a helicopter and drop it from the sky! Congrats to Vicky in Louisburg winning game 2 tickets!”
Listeners were asked to text “CANES” to 919-860-1015 between 7am on Wednesday, May 3 – 7am on Thursday, May 4 to be qualified to be one of two finalists invited to be a part of Carolina’s Highest Puck Drop, sponsored by LS Tractor USA !
MIX fans definitely wanted in on the fun. The radio station received over 1,300 text entries in that one day!
On Thursday, May 4, the MIX team picked two listeners to represent each side of a hockey puck. Then on the following morning, Bryan Lord rode up in a helicopter at Total Flight Solutions in Louisburg, NC and dropped a hockey puck from the sky.
On one side of the puck was a picture of Stormy and on the other side of the puck was a picture of the Canes logo. One contestant chosen on Thursday represented the “Stormy” Side and the other represented the “Canes” side.
WRAL-FM Account Executive Jim Moran made the sponsorship magic happen with LS Tractor USA. Many hands in the MIX studios leapt into action as quick as a hockey player hopping off the bench.
“This idea was finalized on Tuesday, and we got the contest running at 7am on Wednesday, so shout out to the entire CBC Highwoods team (promotions, programming, sales, etc.) for coming together so quickly to do something that nobody else in the market is doing!!!” said WRAL-FM Promotions Manager Shelby Lloyd.
Thanks to 99.9 The Fan’s Brianna Fletcher and WRAL-FM’s Shelby Lloyd for this Capcom scoop, the photos and video.
