Capitol Broadcasting gave away over 5,000 azaleas on Saturday, October 6, 2012, in the 27th year of the WRAL Azalea Celebration. Almost 100 non-profit groups received the plants, selected from among the applications this year.
The board and family members of N.C. Beautiful helped CBC Corporate Property Management staffers to help load the plants. Non-profits picked up their azaleas at the WRAL Transmitter site in Auburn, NC. Each year CBC’s Corporate Property Management, which consists of Tim Grissom and Rodney Collier, take cuttings from the azaleas in the WRAL Azalea Gardens. Pender’s Nursery then takes the cuttings and grows them for CBC and the celebration.
In addition to distributing azaleas, the celebration also involves the A.J. Fletcher Awards presentation each year. Non-profits who received plants three years ago are invited to submit applications for the awards. Judges visit the sites and award non-profits based on the upkeep and use of the azaleas. The awards are named for CBC founder and creator of the WRAL Gardens A.J. Fletcher, the late grandfather of the current CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon.
