CBC once again earned a spot on Carolina Parenting’s N.C. Family-Friendly 50 list. |

Capitol Broadcasting Company has once again made Carolina Parenting’s N.C. Family-Friendly 50 in 2012. The recognition marks the seventh time CBC has appeared on the list.
CBC received the honor at the 2012 Women @ Work Breakfast at American Tobacco’s Bay in Durham on Thursday, September 27, 2012. Several CBC’ers attended the morning event to hear keynote speaker Elissa Schappell talk about the challenges of being a mother in this day and age.
Schappell is the critically acclaimed, award-winning author of the collection of short stories, Blueprints for Building Better Girls. She also writes for Vanity Fair, among other publications.
“I feel it’s my job as a writer to tell the stories we don’t share,” said Schappell. “I want to write honestly, so people won’t feel as alone.”

Schappell spoke of the mixed feelings woman have between wanting to be a mother and wanting to have a career. “Where do my loyalties lie?” she asked.
“We’re at odds with the labels our culture slaps on us,” Schappell said of stereotypes particular to women. “But don’t let anyone ever tell you who you are.”
She spoke of the ambiguous feelings women have as mothers and career women and of the guilt that ties itself into a vicious cycle. But she challenged the attendees to embrace the complications and mixed emotions rather than shunning them.
“We are complicated people, and we should recognize our power and celebrate it,” she said.
Carolina Parent Editor Crickett Gibbons announced the list of N.C. Family Friendly 50 companies. Capitol Broadcasting earned the honor in part because of the focus on fostering a healthy workplace with our Be Active CBC program and annual Health Fair. CBC has a variety of benefits that support working parents and families as well.
Carolina Parenting, owner of Carolina Parent, Charlotte Parent and Piedmont Parent magazines, compiles the list from applicants across the state. The UNC Kenan-Flagler Business helped Carolina Parent select the winners. The entire list of 50 received recognition in the Triangle in the September issue of Carolina Parent.
