Team WRAL once again earned the distinction of being the largest corporate team at the Komen Race for the Cure. The event descended on the Meredith College campus in Raleigh on Saturday, June 9, 2012, and WRAL-TV was front and center in its support.
Team WRAL walked with 177 members strong and raised $11,538.17, fundraising number which continues to grow as members can raise money until July 9th.
A host of CBC’ers joined Team WRAL. WRAL-TV On-Air Personalities Debra Morgan, Mike Maze, Gerald Owens and Ken Smith led a group of Team WRAL members in the 8:45 co-ed 5K.
WRAL-TV Sports Anchor Jeff Gravley ran in the earliest event that day, along with his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Megan. The Gravleys had a special reason for running. Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. The Gravleys ran and then went to Megan’s high school graduation. Quite a busy day for their family!
WRAL-TV Producer Randy Mews ran in the competitive 5K and won his age group! He did double duty by not only racing but worked hard in the WRAL tent after competing.

The WRAL tent was a popular spot at the Komen Race for the Cure. Staffers handed out water bottles, which in high demand.
One WRAL staffer was most central to making Komen a success for Team WRAL. WRAL-TV Associate Producer Debbie Tullos received high praise from her supervisors for the great work she did.
“I can’t say enough about Debbie’s work on this event,” said WRAL-TV Creative Director Shelly Leslie. “She’s nothing short of heroic! She organized, cheered, and encouraged our team from day one. It takes stamina to keep 175 people engaged and energized! The event was flawless and the water bottles (championed by Debbie and awesomely designed by WRAL-TV’s Bill Burch!) we’re THE big hit of the day.”

MIX 101.5 Also Supports Race for the Cure
Once again WRAL-FM MIX 101.5 also pitched in to support the Komen Race for the Cure. Both MIX morning show co-hosts Lynda Loveland and Bill Jordan recruited walkers and runners for Team Lynda and Team Bill. Actually, Jordan enlisted sleepers for his team. Team Bill included people who wanted to sleep in on the day of the race but also wanted to show their support by raising money.
Team Lynda members showed up at Meredith on race day. Overall the teams raced over $1,500 for Komen. New Balance sponsored Team Lynda, and Garner TV & Appliance sponsored Team Bill.
All in all, both CBC teams helped support a very worthy cause.
About 15,000 people total attend the Race and so far the projected totals raised are $1.5 million of a $2 million goal. The number of participants made the Komen Race for the Cure the” largest footrace in North Carolina and the biggest annual fundraiser for breast cancer research and screening programs in the state.”
