The Salvation Army cheerleaders strut their stuff in the 2010 parade. |
A holiday tradition continues on Saturday, November 19, 2011, when the WRAL-TV Raleigh Christmas Parade rolls through downtown Raleigh. WRAL’s live coverage begins at 10am hosted by WRAL morning news anchors Bill Leslie and Kelcey Carlson, with Brian Shrader serving as street-side reporter. North Carolina’s own chart-topping music star, Scotty McCreery, is the grand marshal of this year’s parade.
Presented by the Greater Raleigh Merchant’s Association, this annual event is one of the largest parades on the east coast. An estimated 60,000 people will line the streets, in addition to thousands more watching at home.
The parade will feature floats, twirlers, dancers, North Carolina’s finest marching bands and the biggest helium balloons ever! And as always, a special North Pole visitor will make an appearance at the end of the parade.
The parade route is 1.2 miles long, starting at the corner of Hillsborough and St. Mary’s Street. The parade then travels east on Hillsborough, turns south at the Capitol on Salisbury Street, east on Morgan and then makes a final turn down Fayetteville Street.

New this year, twitter users can follow along behind the scenes of the broadcast as on-air hosts tweet from their vantage points during the set up and throughout live coverage.
