MIX Breaks Record, Raising $1.2 Million with Radiothon

For three days MIX 101.5 worked hard to give a big Valetine’s gift to the kids at Duke Children’s Hospital, and the MIX team and their listeners came through in a huge way. The 17th annual Radiothon pulled in a staggering $1.2 million, outpacing last year’s impressive totals and breaking a record for the most ever raised by a MIX Radiothon.
The little Radiothon that could has turned into a powerhouse as the largest fundraising per capita Radiothon in the world.
MIX personalities and staffers set up camp in the lobby of Duke Children’s Hospital for three days beginning Tuesday, February 15, 2011. They shared stories from children, parents, nurses and doctors from the hospital while volunteers manned the phone bank and pledges came pouring in. A variety of companies, schools and other organizations dropped by with checks and piggy banks full of pennies.
“This year’s Radiothon felt different from the start. There seemed to be an energy about it that proved, once again, that the combination of Duke Children’s Hospital, the staff at WRAL-FM and the MIX listener is a formula for success. We were concerned about reaching our goal of one million dollars for many reasons so when we realized we had set a record for our three day event we were astonished and ecstatic.”

WRAL-FM’s Bill Jordan & Lynda Loveland kicked off the 17th annual Radiothon bright and early on the 15th and continued each day, all day, conducting interviews and making pleas for donations. Vanna Fox kept track of donations, embraced patients and served as cheerleader, while Jim Kelly shared his own story about how a few years ago Duke helped his twins who were born premature.
It was a truly a team effort by MIX, and many others who selflessly shared their time and energy.

A Word from Bill Jordan, MIX 101.5 On-Air Personality & a Radiothon Ringleader
I think it’s just now startin’ to sink in. I keep reflecting on the first radiothon so many years ago – $125,000 in FIVE days – to where we are today. It is a true testimony to the drive and passion of so many people for the kids and families at Duke.
We continue to tweak our presentation…the way we present things. Lori and Jami in production work miracles with the montages. Vanna works tirelessly year round to enlist corporate sponsors. Lynda has an amazing empathy that shines thru on the air. Wayne never leaves the computer, matching the perfect montage or song for the moment. Our engineers who make it happen technically. Our account execs and staff that man the phone bank. I also really wanna thank our management. They provided positive feedback and guidance and generally let us do our thing.
Really, EVERYONE at the station is sold on the cause.
The staff at Duke Children’s Development. The doctors, nurses, volunteers and staff at Duke Medical Center…the parents…and mostly THE KIDS, who remind us every year about what’s really important. Keepin’ HOPE alive.

All of the funds raised will go to support research into the causes and possible cure for devastating childhood illnesses. The monies also provide patient support materials such as toys for the playroom and parent education materials.
Over the past 17 years, MIX 101.5 has raised over $13 for the kids at Duke Children’s Hospital.
