American Tobacco Celebrates Portraits of Courage, Strength and Hope for Cancer Care
New Photography Exhibit Now Open in Strickland Lobby

About 125 guests got a first look at forty of the pieces in a collection celebrating a one-of-a-kind creation in which thousands of patients, friends, families, doctors, nurses, researchers and so many others played a part.
American Tobacco, Capitol Broadcasting & FOX 50 hosted a VIP reception to open “The New Face of Cancer Care” Photo Exhibit on Thursday, May 20, 2010. The exhibit of 23 of the pieces is now open to the public, on display in the lobby of the Strickland Building, through August 8th.
“The New Face of Cancer Care,” is an inspiring portrait exhibit originally created to mark the opening of the N.C. Cancer Hospital, a $180-million building that opened on the UNC Health Care Campus in Chapel Hill in September, 2009. The photographs capture people from across the state in all walks of life who share a common bond – the experience of cancer as a survivor, family, volunteer, or health care provider.

The photographs have been on display at the hospital since the facility’s opening. This is the first time the photo exhibit will be displayed at a public venue outside of the hospital setting.
“When the General Assembly funded the new hospital, their ambition was to ensure that North Carolina’s citizens receive the best care possible. That’s why it is so appropriate that this exhibit is about people and the extraordinary stories that they share,” says Richard M. Goldberg, MD, Physician-in-Chief of the N.C. Cancer Hospital. “For us, the real face of cancer is the human face—full of grace, dignity and determination.”
“It is a truly historic time in North Carolina when we can present an exhibit aimed at raising public awareness of cancer in a facility once used for tobacco production now converted into a multi-use office and entertainment district. We are witnessing a new era in North Carolina as we work to bring all of our citizens the best in cancer prevention, research and treatment. The people who are devoting their lives and careers to cancer research and cancer care at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the N.C. Cancer Hospital aspire to be leaders in that effort,” he added.

Dr. Mask unveiled a new PSA which will air on FOX 50 & WRAL-TV to promote the exhibit:
“The New Face of Cancer Care” Photo Exhibit is on display in the Strickland Building Lobby at American Tobacco. The exhibit will be open daily from 9:00am – 6:00pm until August 8th.
