Area Youth Win, Again
YDF To Donate More Than $14,000
MYRTLE BEACH, SC — The Myrtle Beach Pelicans Youth Diamond Fund announced the recipient of their 2001 grant is the Aynor (SC) Area Little League. A check in the amount of $14,355.67 will be presented to this organization prior to the start of tonight’s Pelicans game versus the Potomac Cannons. The presentation will take place at 6:45 PM.
The chairman of the Youth Diamond Fund, George Cox, will award the check to the chairman of the Aynor Area Little League, Steve Thompson. The Aynor Area Little League is a non-profit organization. The gift will be applied towards putting up lights and fencing in transforming an old practice field into a game field for Dixie Youth Baseball. The field is located on Highway 319 in Aynor. There are approximately 450 boys and girls in the Aynor Area Little League. Cox, Thompson and Pelicans personnel will be available for interviews.
Steve Malliet, the Pelicans former general manager, created The Youth Diamond Fund prior to the start of the Pelicans first season in ’99. The Youth Diamond Fund’s purpose is to raise money through team events and fundraising activities. The collected money is intended for the funding of athletic equipment, development of youth fields, sports-related training and sports-related programs. The raised money is for projects that aid the children of Horry County. Myrtle Beach lies within this county.
The Youth Diamond Fund’s board of directors is made up of Horry County residents that have a strong interest in youth athletics. The board of directors determines the feasibility of proposed projects and the needs of the community in deciding the allocation of the Youth Diamond Fund. One major project for allocation will be selected each year. The Green Sea-Floyds Recreation Department received a $13,000 gift in 2000.
The Pelicans and Cannons play the third game of this four-game series tonight at 7:05 PM. The promotions include “Where’s the beef?” Hamburgers can be purchased at the third base grill stand for just $1. Thirsty Thursday features dollar beer drafts on the Bud Light Berm from 5:30 to 8:00 PM courtesy of Budweiser. After the game, The Johnson Agency/Nationwide Insurance Pitch’n Win Car Giveaway will feature one lucky fan trying to win a brand new Mercedes Benz. For tickets, please call 843-918-6000, order on-line at the Pelicans web site or stop at the Coastal Federal Field ticket office.
