WRAL-TV Lights Tower for Holidays During Special |
WRAL-TV lit its tower for the 44th time this holiday season. |
WRAL-TV aired its first-ever special broadcast program for the annual lighting of its 300-foot television tower. The station usually lights the tower as part of its 5:30pm newscast, but this year opted to produce a live half-hour special to mark the holiday event. The program broadcast at 7:00pm on Monday, December 1, 2003.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Children’s Choir provided several choral holiday selections, and the St. Francis Brass Band, in which WRAL-TV Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel plays the tuba, played festive music as well.
WRAL-TV Anchors David Crabtree, Pam Saulsby, Debra Morgan and Gerald Owens emceed the activities and counted down to the tower lighting shortly before 7:30pm. The special began with a history of the tower lighting, remembering Capitol Broadcasting Company icons A.J. Fletcher, the company founder, and Scottie Stephenson, long-time corporate secretary who passed away last year.
WRAL-TV lit the tower for the 44th time this December. 2,890 lights adorn the tower, which is topped with a lighted star and flashing “5”.
