Former major league pitchers Tommy John & Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry stopped by the WRAL-TV studios for a live interview on the noon news on Tuesday, January 6, 2004.
The two greats bantered back & forth about pitching skills, and after a handshake from Perry, WRAL-TV Anchor Bill Leslie said he is convinced Perry still has it.
John & Perry appeared along with Helen Hunter, widow of legend Jim “Catfish” Hunter who died with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 1999 at age 53. On January 31, 2004, Helen Hunter will host the third annual Field of Dreams Gala to raise funds to find a cause and a cure for ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease for the baseball legend whose death from ALS brought national attention to the disease. Former UNC Tarheel Men’s Basketball Coach Dean Smith is co-chairing the event with Hunter.
The 3rd Annual Field of Dreams Gala will take place at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham.
