Phase II construction on the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham is getting underway, and an anchor tenant for the new slate of renovations has now been signed. Motricity, a premier provider of mobile content and solutions, will move its global headquarters to American Tobacco in 2006.
Motricity plans to lease about 70,000 square feet of office space in the Hill Building on the North West corner of the campus. The announcement came during the first week of August 2005.
Currently located in Meridan Park in Durham, Motricity has offices in Munich, London, Beijing and San Francisco. Boasting 120 million subscribers, Motricity is one of the world’s largest providers of mobile content through its network of consumer web sites and channel partnerships, reaching over 10 million consumers worldwide.
“Motricity has experienced explosive growth over the past year, and we are quickly outgrowing our current facilities, hiring an average of one new employee every other day,” said Ryan Wuerch, chairman and chief executive officer at Motricity. “The American Tobacco Historic District is an ideal location because its exceptional amenities and creative atmosphere will assist us in continuing to attract and retain the very best and the brightest employees.”
“The build-out of the American Tobacco complex is one of the largest revitalization projects in Durham’s history,” said Durham Mayor William Bell. “Motricity is one of the most exciting new companies in the area, and we look forward to having Motricity be part of our growing family in Durham.” In fact, he declared August 3rd as “Motricity Day” in Durham to celebrate the announcement of the move.
The Hill building was constructed in 1900-1901 and is named for the former President of the American Tobacco Company, Percival Hill. Motricity plans to begin construction on their new offices in September with a projected completion date of next June.
