CBC Flips Switch on New Radio Station |
Capitol Broadcasting Company has officially gone country. CBC flipped the switch on radio station WCMC-FM 99.9 Genuine Country on Thursday, October 13, 2005. The station will bring country music from the past and present to the Raleigh-Durham market.
“I’ve always wanted to own a country radio station,” said CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon during the decision-making process to determine the format for WCMC, which stands for County Music Carolina.

WRAL-FM’s Ardie Gregory will run the new station. |
WRAL-FM Vice President & General Manager Ardie Gregory will double as GM of the new station. “Our research told us that Country listeners in the Triangle really like today’s new county music but they LOVE the hits from yesterday from artists like George Jones, Randy Travis, Waylon Jennings and Clint Black.”
So that’s what the Triangle will get.
WCMC-FM 99.9 Genuine Country will kick off with 10,000 songs in a row to give everyone a chance to sample the station and then become loyal listeners. Country music fans will hear favorite memorable music and artists not heard on any other Triangle radio station.
“This radio station is exciting and important for several reasons,” said Gregory, Vice President of Capitol Broadcasting Company’s radio division. “First, this is a brand new frequency in the Raleigh-Durham market. This is not a format change; until today WCMC 99.9FM did not exist. Another is that Genuine Country feels like home, playing country favorites that can’t be heard anywhere else in the Triangle. We know listeners like today’s new country music, but we also know they LOVE songs and artists from yesterday…c’mon can you really have a country radio station and not play Willie and Waylon?”
