Boston Herald sports columnist Steve Buckley announced today via his column that he has accepted the Durham Bulls invitation to participate in a “Complete Durham Bulls Experience” at a game this season. Buckley was offered this opportunity in response to his column on Monday, March 19th, At the Heart of Duke-ness, where he referred to Durham as “Just another Minor League Tank Town.”
“Yes, absolutely, I intend to take the Bulls up on their generous offer,” Buckley wrote, “Having visited minor-league ballparks throughout this great country over the years Ñ Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, the late, great Parker Field in Richmond Ñ this is one more chance to see one more park.”
Buckley will participate in numerous events at the ballpark, including working the manual scoreboard, dragging the infield with the grounds crew and doing an inning as Public Address announcer. While he says he appreciates the invitation, should any local media cover the event it would only prove his point about Durham.
“That any media outlet in North Carolina would even touch this thing only hammers home the original point: With Duke having gone up in flames in the first round of the NCAA tourney, there really isn’t anything going on in Durham these days.”
