NCNN Named Outstanding News Operation by NC Associated Press for Second Year Running

The North Carolina News Network is once again the North Carolina Associated Press Broadcasters’ Outstanding News Operation. NCNN brought home the tops honors, as well as six additional awards, from the annual NCAPB Convention at Elon University on Saturday, March 28th.

NCNN News Producer/Special Projects Clayton Henkel racked up five of the awards herself, while NCNN Anchor/Reporter Bruce Ferrell continued his reign in the Sportcast category.

“Congratulations to everyone at NCNN,” said NCNN News Director Ellen Reinhardt. “I’m thrilled they have been recognized by their peers for the quality of their work.”

NCNN brought home the first place following awards:

  • NCNN was named Outstanding News Operation

  • Spot News: Clayton Henkel and Ellen Reinhardt won for NCNN’s coverage of November’s deadly tornado

  • Enterprise/Investigative: Clayton Henkel won for her Beyond the Headlines series “Net Change on the North Carolina Coast”

  • Best Feature: Clayton Henkel received an Honorable Mention for her report on the State Fair

  • Best Sportscast: Bruce Ferrell logged in a back-to-back win this year

  • Best Health Report: Clayton Henkel won for her Beyond the Headlines series “Unplanned Parenthood”

  • Best News Writing: Clayton Henkel

NCNN’s entire staff contributed to the overall win as Outstanding News Operation, including David Horn, Clayton Henkel, Ellen Reinhardt, Bruce Ferrell, Matt Willoughby and Victoria Pridgen.

WRAL-TV also brought home several awards from the NCAPB annual convention in the television category, including Best Website for WRAL.com. Read about the NCAPB awards won by the Big 5 here.
