Negro League Baseball Stamps Make Debut at DBAP |
On the first day of its nationwide issuance, the U.S. Postal Service introduced the new 44-cent commemorative Negro Leagues Baseball stamps at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Thursday, prior to the Bulls’ 7:05pm game vs. the Charlotte Knights . It is the only such event scheduled in the Triangle area.
Durham Postmaster Mike King served as the dedicating official, and made a special presentation to the Bulls as well.
The Negro Leagues Baseball stamps, to be issued July 15, pay tribute to the all-black professional baseball leagues that operated from 1920 to about 1960. Drawing some of the most remarkable athletes ever to play the sport, the Negro leagues galvanized African-American communities across the country, challenged racist notions of athletic superiority, and ultimately sparked the integration of American sports.
